Key Impacts on Middle Eastern Children:

  • Unexploded Ordnance (UXO): Landmines and leftover explosives are a leading cause of injuries, with an average of four children killed or injured daily by these devices.
  • Physical & Mental Trauma: Many children suffer from severe injuries, including head traumas and missing limbs, alongside extreme anxiety, sadness, and malnutrition.
  • Education and Health Crisis: Thousands of schools and hospitals have been destroyed or damaged, leaving children without access to education or necessary medical care.
  • Displacement: Millions of children are internally displaced or refugees in neighboring countries, living in camps with limited resources.

Iran school strike: US tomahawk killed children in military error—report

An internal U.S. military investigation has determined that the United States was responsible for a deadly Tomahawk missile strike that hit an elementary school in Iran, killing over 170 children and wounding more, U.S. officials and others familiar with the preliminary findings told The New York Times.

“The majority of those killed in the strikes were girls between the ages of 7 and 12 years old. Neither the United States nor the Israeli Government has yet taken responsibility for this attack,” they wrote.

Iranian Elementary School Bombing: What To Know

The bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School occurred during school hours, the Associated Press reported. It was among the earliest and deadliest reported mass-casualty attacks of the war.

Lebanon

The girls were aged 7 to 12, according to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner.

An AP review of satellite imagery shows the school largely decimated. The school was near an IRGC compound, the Seyyed Al-Shohada Cultural Complex of the Guard, which is likely why it was struck, according to the AP. Two anonymous officials earlier told Reuters that U.S. military investigators believed American forces were likely responsible for the attack.   83 children killed and 254 injured in the past 7 days, while hundreds of thousands flee their homes  since March 2.

Ted Chaiban, the deputy executive director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said Monday that 324 children have been killed in Iran and Lebanon since the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran started.

At a press briefing in New York City, Chaiban said that 206 children in Iran and 118 children in

Lebanon have been killed since the U.S. and Israel began strikes on Feb. 28. Four children in Israel and one child in Kuwait have been killed by Iranian retaliation, he added.

In total, Chaiban said that more than 2,100 children have been killed or injured in the region since fighting began.

“Behind these numbers are parents, grandparents, teachers, brothers, and sisters,” he remarked. “Communities, cities, and nations are in shock. Alongside the dead and wounded, we are witnessing rapid displacement across several countries, driven by relentless bombardment and evacuation orders that have emptied communities, and entire urban areas.”

 Gaza

Based  on reports as of September 2025, the war in Gaza has disproportionately  affected children, with at least 19,424 children reported killed

Thousands more have sustained injuries leading to permanent  disabilities, such as amputations, alongside widespread malnutrition and  disease.

At least one Palestinian child has been killed every hour on average by Israeli forces in Gaza over nearly 23 months of war, with the number of children killed now surpassing 20,000, Save the Children said.

GAZA, 6 September 2025 – At least one Palestinian child has been killed every hour on average by Israeli forces in Gaza over nearly 23 months of war, with the number of children killed now surpassing 20,000, Save the Children said.

The latest data released by the Government Media Office in Gaza showed at least 20,000 children - about 2% of Gaza’s child population - have been killed since October 2023.

At least 1,009 of the children killed were under age one, with nearly half (450) of these babies born and killed during the war. At least 42,011 children have been injured, according to the Ministry of Health, with the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities reporting at least 21,000 children left permanently disabled. Thousands more are missing or presumed buried under rubble.

After 23 months of war, the lives of surviving children are at risk daily. The famine in Gaza Governorate is likely to spread in the coming weeks with over a million people, about half of whom are children, already facing catastrophic hunger, the worst-case IPC Phase 5. At least 132,000 children aged under five face risk of death from acute malnutrition, and at least 135 children have already starved to death, 20 of them since famine was declared on 22 August, according to the Ministry of Health.

Syria

Nearly 13,000 children have been killed or injured since the start of the war in Syria. One-third of all recorded injuries and deaths are caused by encounters with landmines and other remnants of war. Just this past weekend, three children were reportedly killed by unexploded ordnance in Aleppo city.

Those who survive such encounters are left with lifelong disabilities. And children with disabilities(opens in new tab) carry a double burden when it comes to violence, threats to their health and safety, hunger, risk of abuse and loss of education.

The hardships their families face, and that most families face in Syria today — limited employment opportunities, skyrocketing prices, unprecedented levels of poverty, severe shortages of basic goods and services — makes getting children with disabilities the care they need difficult. Lack of mobility and difficulty fleeing from harm further compound their obstacles.
